Looking After Your Skin When You Fly

Flying is an uncomfortable experience at the best of times and pretty much any flight over 2 hours can take it's toll. The trick, as with everything, is to be prepared.

Pressurised cabins on commercial aircraft are hellish on the skin. The air conditioning, the lack of sleep, even just the change in your normal skin care routine will all help to make you skin feel dry, uncomfortable and generally a bit unhealthy by the time you get to your destination. Especially if you go long haul in which case you can expect it to be even worse!

Before You Fly...

Be prepared - Make sure you take all the things with you that you'll need. We're fairly restricted now in terms of the products we're allowed to take on flights for security reasons but most companies now cater for that with smaller, flight friendly versions of their products, even the more expensive boutique ranges will have a travel pack of some sort - and if you can't find that then why not try asking them for some sample tubes for your trip?

Guys - there are plenty of men's skin care products available these days, even in flight friendly, travel size packaging - just get your better half to find some for you... Or you could always steal hers?

Take lots of moisturisers and hand creams to keep your hands, face and any exposed skin fully hydrated. Take your own tissues and maybe an antibacterial hand gel because you'll be sharing a confined space for some time...

On the Flight...

Plenty of fluids are important (water is by far your best bet as opposed to dehydrating alcohol) and helps keep your skin hydrated. Make sure you moisturise regularly, paying extra attention to any exposed skin areas. Lips can suffer a lot on a long flight so carry a good, perhaps medicated, chap stick with you and don't forget to use it.

When You Land...

Don't forget, it could be hot where you're going (that's probably the point!), so make sure you slap on the sun protection lotion before you get off the plane - there won't be much time afterwards and you could be outside a lot.

If you have connecting flights or overnight stops then you may need some shampoo, conditioner and shower gel to hand in your travel kit. You may not use it on the plane but you'll certainly prefer it to the kind of stuff you find in airport hotels!

And don't forget to relax, travelling can be fun and stress shows on your face...
